A'ISHA BINT ABU BAKR
A'isha was instumental in the development and expression of Islam. A'isha was a great public speaker and because of her ability to write and speak fluently assisted her to spread the word of Muhammad. She had outstanding memory which was conveyed through her ability to remember the 2000 Hadiths (recorded teaching of Muhammad outside the Quran) which are a vital aspect in Islam and because of her outstanding memory she was able to memorise the whole Quran which expressed her knowledge and understandings of Islam. Because of her knowledge of the Quran and Hadiths she was able to talk with authority on such issues so she was by well-respected by the community. She was a social and military leader of the muslim community, devoted to the education of women a Quranic interpreter and a Hadith Transmitter and she dedicated her life to scholar pursuits. Many of the learning companions of the prophet benefitted from her knowledge.
Role Model
A'isha was a role model for several reasons. She encouraged education for women and became a persuasive and clear speaker, men and women either far or near would come to benefit from her knowledge of Islam. She displayed that woman could be the authority on religion and Islam and would take care of children and educated them. She challenged the gender norms of the time and even for contemporary times.
Two of her journeys were responsible for revelations to Muhammad, these revelations are included in the Quran
` The first sometimes referred to as “the affair of the slander” brought a revelations about adultery.
` The second brought about a revelation about ablution (ritual act of washing or cleansing).
Even after Prophet Muhammad's PBUH death she remained devoted to sustain and preserve the religion that was established by her husband and even taking extremes measures to do so.
A'isha's transmission of the 2000 and over Hadith is her greatest contribution to Islam. The influence of Hadith in contemporary times informs muslims of the Prophet's PBUH personal behaviour and provides them with information about different ways of living. It is impossible to understand the Quran without referring to the Hadith and it is impossible to explain a Hadith without relating it to the Quran. To specify the Hadith explains, clarifies, and paraphrases the Qur'an. In transmitting the Hadith, A’isha became a source of knowledge and wisdom for both men and women.
